In the United States, individual states issue the professional licenses for the vast majority of telehealth professionals (unless federally employed.) Most telemedicine professionals who wish to “telepractice” in states in which they don’t reside must first apply for additional state licenses. This results in duplicative paperwork, expense, frustrating wait times (for both clinicians and clients) and a lack of uniformity in state credentialing fees and requirements. The current status functionally limits consumers’ access to expert care and stands to impede the growth of multi-disciplinary team-based telemedicine.
Join Jon Linkous, ATA CEO, and Ellen Cohn, PhD, Chair of the ATA Telerehabilitation Special Interest Group, as they describe the current 50 state system for medical licensure and practice regulation and efforts to facilitate solutions that will potentially benefit consumers, clinicians and fiscally challenged state governments.
Jon Linkous is the Chief Executive Officer of the American Telemedicine Association (ATA), the largest membership-based organization in the world focusing exclusively on providing health and medical care through telecommunications technology. As the chief staff executive of ATA, Mr. Linkous has spoken and written extensively in the U.S. and in other countries on policy issues, emerging applications and market trends affecting telemedicine. Mr. Linkous has over 20 years experience in the nation's capital working in corporate and public sectors.
Ellen Cohn, PhD, CCC-SLP is Associate Dean for Instructional Development, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Pittsburgh and a co-investigator on the Department of Education, NIDRR funded Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC) on Telerehabilitation.
